What a true first shows: The true global first edition is the UK Jonathan Cape hardcover (London, 1981). THIS copy is the FIRST AMERICAN EDITION published by Alfred A. Knopf — a first printing of the U.S. issue, but not the world first. Both were published in 1981; the Cape edition is the priority true first for collectors.

The dust jacket is protected in a new archival mylar cover, included.

Ships with two custom 8x5x11 cards made for this copy: an accession card carrying the edition's own history, and an authentication record listing the identification points checked on this copy. Both carry the same certificate number.

This copy is the FIRST AMERICAN EDITION published by Alfred A. Knopf.

Points: Copyright page states 'Copyright © 1980 by Salman Rushdie', 'Published in the United States by Alfred A. Knopf, Inc.', 'Originally published in England by Jonathan Cape Ltd., London', and explicitly 'FIRST AMERICAN EDITION' with no number line and no later-printing notice. LCCN 80-2712, ISBN 0-394-51470-X. Jacket carries $13.95 price and code '4/81'; jacket design by Paul Bacon.
