What a true first shows: The Decameron is a 14th-century work; the true first of THIS edition is the first Modern Library printing of the Frances Winwar translation, copyright 1955 (the translation itself first appeared from the Limited Editions Club, 1930). Modern Library printings are distinguished not by a number line but by the copyright-page edition note ('First Modern Library Edition'), the ML logo/torchbearer style, endpaper design, and the dated list of titles printed on the dust jacket spine and flaps.
